This is cool, Kitty. I keep a grid of my mini-lessons for each grade level for the year but I like the idea of connecting the standards to the SHoM in this grid format. I was wondering why you chose national over state standards. The challenge I have found with teaching a choice-based studio program and curriculum mapping is that although I have set skills and concepts I teach at each grade level, the curriculum is emergent as I gear my mini-lessons to what is happening in each classroom based on student interests, skill level and artistic behaviors. I have a hard time saying I teach XXX only in 3rd grade. How would you transfer this information into assessment?
ReplyDeleteReally interesting and I am grateful you did this. To be honest I am completely overwhelmed with all the curriculum alignments we have to do, for Common Core, REACH, ACT prep, EPAS & various other tests, IL state standards. I have just shut down. Dare I ask what the national standards are? Do you have a link? Is this only for elementary? I like your grid and I wonder if we can figure out how to align SHoM with all the other standards we are supposed to be simultaneously using. I might be able to actually articulate it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie and Valerie for responding to this grid. First off Julie, I have decided that within the happenings of the TAB classroom there are many options for introducing concepts. Because we are beholden to the standard or common core at some point we need to address these goals throughout the year. The emergent aspect of the curriculum is represented in the grid. I must say since I have heard what "understanding the art world" can be in terms of artists role in a community, I have added the mini lessons around collaboration.
ReplyDeleteValerie the national standards are the standards I followed for the National Boards. You can find them in the Chicago Art Guide or on the the national boards website. www.nbpts.org I definitely think we could and should align the standards with SHoM. It would be great. I am using the 8 studio habits with the classroom teachers. They have totally embraced the language.
